Why Choose Timber Windows for Your Essex Property?

Timber is the authentic choice for the county’s period homes, but its appeal goes well beyond appearance. Our windows are crafted from engineered, knot-free timber for strength and stability, and are supplied factory-finished with a spray-applied micro-porous paint system that allows the wood to breathe.

Performance is built in rather than bolted on. Our sash windows can achieve U-values as low as 1.1 W/m²K and our flush casements as low as 1.0 W/m²K, while independent BM TRADA testing gives our acoustic-upgrade flush casement a rating of 42dB and our box sash 38dB. Windows and doors are internally glazed and tested to PAS 24 security standards.

Timber is also the responsible choice. As an FSC® Chain of Custody certified company, every product we make is traceable from sustainable source to installation. With proper care, a well-made timber window will last 60 years or more.

Timber Window Installations Across Essex

In Margaretting, as part of an ongoing partnership, we supplied energy-efficient, double glazed Georgian-style spring balance sash windows from our Kensington & Chelsea range, chosen to bring as much natural light as possible into the property. The project included 22 sash windows, two sash bays, French doors with sidelights and a double entrance door, all crafted in engineered redwood with sapele cills, 20mm Ovolo glazing bars and a three-coat factory finish in RAL 9010 white.

For a 17th-century Essex farmhouse, draughty single glazing and poor modern replacements were replaced with 30 flush casement windows and eight traditional cord and weight box sash windows, all conservation area approved. The result proves that high-performance double glazing and authentic historic sightlines can sit comfortably together. The homeowner chose our Gold Installation Package for complete peace of mind from survey to final fit.

Barn Conversions and Country Homes

When architects set out to transform a traditional Essex barn into a contemporary family home, we supplied and installed 23 units, including 18 flush casement windows, bi-fold doors and two bespoke triangular feature windows that follow the barn’s roofline. Every piece was made in engineered sapele with an ebony stain, honouring the building’s agricultural heritage while opening it up to views across the surrounding farmland.

At a country farmhouse in the Essex countryside, the brief was to restore original character while meeting a 38dB acoustic rating. Kensington & Chelsea spring balance sash windows, set in a flush reveal with historically accurate sightlines, delivered on both counts.

Timber Windows for Essex Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings

With hundreds of conservation areas and thousands of listed buildings, Essex is a county where window choices are often scrutinised by planning officers. Our made-to-order windows can replicate original profiles, glazing bars and mouldings precisely, giving your application the best chance of approval while bringing the property up to modern Building Regulations.

A set of grand, double timber doors, painted a muted green and featuring classical paneling, stand slightly ajar. These doors, made by Lomax + Wood, are set within a white facade with fluted pilasters. Two black lanterns adorn the wall on either side of the entrance, and potted plants sit on a checkered tile entryway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Explore answers to common queries about our bespoke wooden windows, from customisation options to installation and maintenance tips.

Do you supply and install timber windows across Essex?

Yes. We are based in Mountnessing, near Brentwood, and supply and install made-to-order timber windows throughout Essex, as well as across London and the wider UK.

Can I see your timber windows before I order?

Yes. Our North Barn showroom in Mountnessing has full-sized working displays of our timber sash and casement windows and doors. Visits are by appointment, so please get in touch to arrange a time.

Can I fit timber windows in an Essex conservation area or listed building?

In most cases, yes, and timber is often the material planners prefer. Our windows can be made to replicate original sightlines and details. Listed building consent or planning permission may be required, so we recommend speaking to your local planning authority early. We can supply drawings and technical information to support your application.

How long do timber windows last?

With regular maintenance, a quality timber window can last 60 years or more. Our factory-applied micro-porous paint finish typically needs recoating every five to ten years.

Are wooden window frames better than uPVC?

That’s a subjective question, but we would certainly say timber windows have several advantages over uPVC. They look more natural and tend to positively impact value, especially on older properties. Timber is also more sustainable and works out much more cost-effective than uPVC in the long term.

Are timber windows energy efficient?

Yes. Our timber sash windows can achieve U-values as low as 1.1 W/m²K and our flush casement windows as low as 1.0 W/m²K, with double and triple glazing options available

Do you work with architects and developers in Essex?

Yes. A large share of our work is specified by architects, developers and contractors. We provide CAD drawings, technical data and site surveys, and can support projects from one-off homes to larger developments.
