They were the most common choice throughout the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. Although they briefly fell out of favour in the early to mid-20th century, they are once again a popular choice for modern homes and commercial properties.

What are Double Hung Sash Windows?

Sash windows have been popular in homes and businesses since the 17th century. They have two panels, and typically, one is fixed and the other slides vertically to open. With double hung sash windows, both panels can be moved, so the window can be opened by either sliding the top sash down or the lower sash up.

What Are Georgian Sash Windows?

Sash windows have been part of the UK’s architectural landscape for over 350 years. Ham House, a stately home in Richmond upon Thames, boasts the oldest sash windows in the country – these were installed in 1670 during the reign of King Charles II. But it was during the Georgian period, between 1714 and 1837, that sash windows really became popular, and not just in lavish country homes and imposing townhouses. Georgian sash windows are likely to be found in any surviving property of the era. Their unique style contributes to Georgian properties being voted the most desirable in the UK in a 2019 study by Anglian Home Improvements.

Timber sash windows and doors in Deans Mews, London, Conservation Area

Lomax + Wood are timber sash window specialists and were the natural choice for a prestigious London project of this nature in a London conservation area. The new buildings helped to restore the historic arrangement of the plots and help unify the mews. The buildings they replaced were built post-1959 and not deemed of merit allowing the opportunity to arise.
